MARENSICO – A special meeting was held last night by, the Gogebic Range Solid Waste Management Authority’s board as they take steps to fill several unexpected vacancies that disrupted trash collection for a large portion of the Gogebic Range several weeks ago. Following the departure of two of the authority’s drivers/collectors at the end of the Memorial Day weekend, authority officials said the remaining staff scrambled to complete the garbage routes along with some temporary help they enlisted. The board agreed to begin the search and the hiring process for one full-time CDL-licensed driver/collector, one part-time CDL-licensed driver/collector and one part-time driver/collector without a CDL. These hires, once completed, should bring the authority back to the normal staffing levels. Also at last night’s special meeting, the board formalized the termination of the two former employees’ employment with the authority — retroactively effective to May 27. The authority is comprised of Ironwood Township, Bessemer, Bessemer Township, Wakefield, Wakefield Township and Marenisco Township.
