Wastewater Treatment Facility began discharging wastewater to the Montreal River due to excessive flows

Written by on April 18, 2019

IRONWOOD – Due to excessive flows from wet weather as of last night at 9pm the Gogebic-Iron Wastewater Authority’s Treatment Facility began discharging wastewater to the Montreal River that has not received full advanced treatment. This bypass of the authority’s advanced treatment system is required to prevent sewage backups and to protect the failure of these advanced treatment systems. While the majority of wastewater is still receiving advanced treatment, the portion of highly diluted wastewater that is bypassing these advance treatment systems is receiving a level of treatment that protects the Montreal River. The bypassing of the authority’s advanced treatment system was due to heavy rain and a saturated ground.
