L’Anse man found dead in 11 feet of water in Baraga County

Written by on November 18, 2022

BARAGA – The Baraga County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a missing L’Anse man who was found dead in the Keweenaw Bay yesterday morning.  Baraga County sheriff’s deputies first responded to a missing person complaint on Tuesday night after a 35-year-old L’Anse man had not reported to work that day and was last seen early Monday morning.  On Wednesday morning, deputies located a stretch of damaged guardrail on US-41 at the head of Keweenaw Bay between L’Anse and Baraga. Baraga County sheriff’s deputies and officers from the Keweenaw Bay Tribal Police Department and the Baraga Village Police Department searched the area and found debris and what appeared to be oil on the surface of the water.  The sheriff’s office said the vehicle matched the description of the one belonging to the missing L’Anse man.  The search for the missing man continued Thursday morning.  At about 1:00 yesterday the MSP dive team found the missing man dead in about 11 feet of water.  An investigation is still ongoing, and the victim’s name is being withheld until the family is notified.
