Written by on June 23, 2021

HAYWARD – A Milwaukee man is in custody after allegedly threatening hikers in Sawyer County and leading authorities on a chase.  It began when a hiker called 911 to report that a man had asked her group to loan him money, saying that he pulled a gun and threatened harm after they said they didn’t have any money with them.  Sawyer County Deputies assisted by the Hayward Police Department later spotted the suspects’ vehicle in Hayward. They attempted to make a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled north on U.S. Highway 63 and then east on State Highway 77.  The chase ended when LCO Police officers deployed tire deflation devices on Highway 77, disabling the vehicle the 45-year-old suspect then held deputies in a standoff that lasted nearly an hour and a half before he was arrested. The suspect is expected to face charges of first-degree recklessly endangering safety, terroristic threats, being a felon in possession of a firearm, fleeing an officer, and felony bail jumping.  Similar incidents have also occurred in Bayfield and Iron counties, police are continuing to investigate to determine if there is any connection.
