Vilas County Forestry and Recreation Considering Change to Use of Public Facilities

EAGLE RIVER – The Vilas County Forestry, Recreation and Land Committee could start charging visitors a fee for using county lands, like public parks and boat landings. The county asks for donations, but the cost of upkeep on facilities continues to rise. The county is debating using either machines or signs with QR codes to collect. Visitors would use their smartphones to not only pay fees, but also to act as virtual tour guides. One sticking point, cellular service at a lot of public areas isn’t great. Money collected would go directly back to the county. There are still challenges the Vilas County Board is ironing out, but the new policy could bring in several thousand dollars for upkeep.
