RHINELANDER- The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest is preparing to conduct prescribed fire activities to restore and improve wildlife habitat and to reduce wildfire risk across northern Wisconsin. Certified professional fire specialists expect to begin work in early April as weather and fire danger conditions allow. Prescribed fires are scheduled this year for 10 sites in Bayfield County, 1 in Vilas County and 3 in Price County. Sites scheduled for prescribed fire projects will remain open for recreation use, but the forest will restrict access during active fire operations. Residents and passersby should stay alert to signage, road closures and other notices.
