Big Boost in Cornonavirus testing coming to Gogebic County

WAKEFIELD – The Western Upper Peninsula Health Department (WUPHD) is expecting to report increased COVID-19 testing numbers over the next few days. This increase is due to a collaborative effort between the WUPHD, Michigan’s State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) and the Michigan National Guard (MING) to expand surveillance testing in the area. Long-term care facilities in the Western UP, including the Gogebic County Medical Care Facility in Wakefield, have volunteered to be a part of this project. The SEOC will transport test kits and the MING will assist with testing the staff who choose to participate. Facility staff will test residents who choose to participate, using kits supplied by the SEOC. There is currently no vaccine to prevent COVID-19. The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus.
