UPPER PENINSULA – Congressman Jack Bergman is calling on Michigan to stop giving residents extra federal unemployment benefits. So far 23 states, all led by Republican governors, have announced plans to stop giving its residents extra federal unemployment benefits. Last week, Bergman was one of several members of congress to send a letter to Governor Whitmer asking Michigan to do the same. Currently Michigan gives up to $662 a week in unemployment benefits; $300 of that comes from federal money. That benefit is set to expire in September. A spokesperson for the governor says, “The governor does not support taking unemployment benefits away from people who have lost a job through no fault of their own during the pandemic.”
