IRON BELT - At least an 10 alarm fire Friday at Whitecap Mountain. Fire engulfed the entire north side of the main lodge building. Those familiar with the lodge would know this as the main kitchen area. The fire is believed to have started just after 4:00, the cause is unknown at this time, no known injuries at this time. Near by Weber Lake was the source of the water for fire crews. With temperatures near 0 fire crews are experienced an additional challenge in fighting that large fire. Saxon/Gurney, Oma, Hurley, Montreal, Kimball, Mellen, Bessemer Township, Anderson, Ironwood and Ironwood Townships Fire crews are on scene. The glow of the flames can be scene on highway 77 more than 3 miles away. More than 70 people work at the hill and Whitecap Mountain just opened a month ago under new ownership. The result of Friday nights fire at Whitecap Mountain was devastating. Just after 10:00 Saturday morning in the main parking lot with the smell of smoke still very heavy in the air, the remains of the main lodge still smoldering, and officials seeing what can be saved you could see the lifts running and skiers taking advantage of the excellent slope conditions. Now starts the rebuilding process as plans to rebuild are already underway. Friday nights fire is still under investigation, however it’s common belief it started in a fireplace chimney. There were no injuries as a result of the fire and the nearby Mountain Meadow Condos were spared from the flames. Fire crews were on scene for much of the overnight Volunteers and local businesses donated food and coffee to the firefighters last night.
