EAGLE RIVER – This snowmobile season is one of the deadliest in Vilas County. Vilas County is struggling with one of the deadliest weeks of the season, with nine snowmobile deaths in the state, five of which occurred in the county. The most recent crash claimed the lives of two people. The deputy chief of the Vilas County Sheriff’s Department says most crashes happen in the evening, but this year, accidents are happening much earlier in the day. Chief Deputy Patrick Schmidt said that deaths of any number are unacceptable, so the Sheriff’s office has increased officer patrols on trails. The snowmobile patrol officers are making sure folks are registered, staying on the trails and they’re looking for reckless riders.
