BESSEMER – Bessemer Veterans Selling Poppies in Advance of Memorial Day. Members of the Bessemer VFW Post 3673 and American Legion Post 27 have been going out into the community exchanging silk poppies for a donation, with the proceeds going to help veterans through the Service Members Relief Fund. The annual Poppy sale provides help to disabled and needy vets in V.A. hospitals, as they assemble the red silk flowers for sale. Poppies are available at the Bessemer American Legion and VFW Posts. The poppy first became the official flower of commemoration for those who fought and died in the war back in 1920.
