Gogebic Miners football goes to an 8-man format.

BESSEMER – The face of Gogebic Range football is changing. The Bessemer School board unanimously agreed to move the Gogebic Miners football team to an eight-man football team starting in the fall. No discussion surrounded the change took place last night. Documentation provided prior to the meeting raised concerns regarding declining participation and safety concerns as the upcoming team would lack upperclassmen representation. The document also cites rumors that other teams in regional conferences are moving to the 8-man style. The Gogebic Miners program, which began as a Bessemer-Wakefield team and later added Ironwood to the mix, had a tough time last fall, losing the few games it was able to play in a COVID-19 shortened season by relatively wide margins. Athletic directors from the respective schools had met, and all decided to back the change.
