BESSEMER – Meanwhile in Bessemer the portable storage container debate continued last night. The storage containers look like semi truck trailers without wheels and are made completely from steel. Last night commission members decided not to support Ordinance No. 371, which prohibits portable storage containers more than 100 square feet in size. The same ordinance had been tabled after a related public hearing last month. Last night city Manager Charlie Loper showed members a video on the storage containers, and members resulted in agreeing that such units can be used for positive ends. Loper will be compiling a set of conditions for the allowable use of storage conditions and requested that one condition be that their placement would not obstruct views and be limited to back yards, Everyone on the commission agreed that only shipping containers should be allowed, not semitrailers.
