A Hurley man gives up his fight to save the Hurley Midgets name and mascot

HURLEY – A Hurley man officially gives up his fight to save the Hurley Midgets name and mascot and is taking full responsibly for an incident last week which caused the Hurley School go to a “code yellow” lock down. In a hand written letter to MIX 106.9 and OLDIES 102.9 News Duane Levra says his comments on the day of February 21st at the Hurley School were taken out of context and resulted in the school lock down. Levra says as a result he will be stepping down as the chairman of the committee for the concerned taxpayer and alumni, A group trying to save the “Midget” name and mascot. Levra’s letter also states the issue of changing the Hurley Midgets name and Mascot has divided the community and Levra himself lost friends as a result. The Hurley School Board earlier this school year announced that the Midgets name and mascot will change and a group including Community Members, Students, members of the school board and others will come up with a new name and mascot which will then be announce to the public by the end of this school year.
